How the Netherlands to South Africa freight works

Rotterdam is Europe's largest port and a natural consolidation point for goods sourced across the EU. Schiphol is a major cargo hub for perishables, pharmaceuticals and high-value goods.

Ocean FCL

Full 20ft and 40ft containers from Rotterdam, best value once you fill more than roughly half a container.

Ocean LCL

Groupage for part loads, priced per cubic metre or ton. Ideal for machinery parts, spares and regular smaller orders.

Air freight

Fast lanes from Amsterdam Schiphol into OR Tambo (JNB) and Cape Town for urgent, high-value or time-critical cargo.

Supplier collection

We collect from the factory (EXW/FCA) or take over at the port (FOB), so you can buy on the term that suits your supplier.

OriginModeIndicative transit to South Africa
RotterdamOcean FCL25–32 days to Durban
RotterdamOcean LCL30–40 days
Amsterdam SchipholAir freight2–5 days to JNB

Times are indicative port-to-port or airport-to-airport and vary with carrier, routing, transhipment and season. We confirm the current schedule with every quote.

Cut your duty with EU–SADC EPA origin

Most goods made in the EU qualify for reduced or zero South African import duty under the SADC–EU Economic Partnership Agreement, but only if the origin paperwork is right before the goods land.

EUR.1 or origin declaration

Your Dutch supplier issues an EUR.1 movement certificate, or an origin declaration on the invoice where they are an approved exporter or the shipment qualifies. No proof, no preference.

Classification first

We check the HS tariff code against the SACU tariff before you buy, so you know the full-rate and preferential duty in advance.

Common mistake

Goods shipped from the EU but made elsewhere do not qualify. We check origin rules on mixed or re-exported consignments.

How we run a Netherlands import

  1. Quote and planning. Send the supplier invoice or pro forma, packing details and Incoterm. We return a landed-cost quote, not just a freight rate.
  2. Booking and collection. We book space and collect from your supplier or receive at the Dutch port or airport.
  3. Documents. Bill of lading or air waybill, commercial invoice, packing list and EPA origin proof are checked before departure.
  4. SARS clearance. As a SARS-licensed clearing agent we lodge the customs entry ourselves, calculate duty and VAT and manage any inspection.
  5. Delivery. Release from the port or airport and delivery to your door anywhere in South Africa or onward into SADC.

Rotterdam: your European consolidation hub

Rotterdam is Europe's largest port and a natural gathering point for goods bought across the Netherlands, Belgium and western Germany. Consolidating European suppliers into one Rotterdam shipment often costs less than shipping each order separately.

What South African businesses import from the Netherlands

Dutch exports to South Africa are dominated by equipment, ingredients and products where the Netherlands leads globally.

Agricultural and horticultural equipment

Greenhouse systems, irrigation, packhouse and processing machinery.

Food ingredients and dairy

Milk powders, ingredients and processed foods, many needing health import permits.

Plant material and seed

Bulbs, seed and plant material need phytosanitary certificates and import permits.

Chemicals and plastics

Industrial chemicals, polymers and coatings, often classed as dangerous goods.

Medical and lab equipment

Equipment and consumables, some requiring SAHPRA or other approvals.

Re-exported European goods

Goods made elsewhere in Europe but shipped via Dutch distributors — declared by country of manufacture.

Exporting from South Africa to the Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the largest destinations for South African fruit, wine and processed food, much of it distributed onward across Europe.

  1. Confirm EU entry requirements. Fresh produce, food and plant products need phytosanitary or health certificates and must meet EU rules.
  2. Choose reefer or dry. Citrus, grapes and deciduous fruit ship in temperature-controlled reefers from Cape Town or Durban.
  3. Prove origin. An EUR.1 or origin declaration can secure preferential duty into the EU under the EPA.
  4. SARS export clearance. We file the export declaration and coordinate the booking.

Netherlands to South Africa import FAQs

Can I consolidate goods from several European suppliers in Rotterdam?

Yes. Suppliers across Europe can deliver to a consolidation point in Rotterdam, and we ship everything together in one container or LCL booking.

Do goods from the Netherlands qualify for EPA preference?

Only goods that originate in the EU qualify. Goods made outside the EU and shipped from Rotterdam pay the full duty rate, so we check origin before shipping.

Can you handle temperature-controlled cargo from Schiphol?

Yes, we arrange temperature-controlled air freight for pharmaceuticals, plants and perishables, subject to permits.

How long does air freight from Amsterdam take?

Usually 2 to 5 days airport to airport into OR Tambo, depending on routing and space.

How long does sea freight from Rotterdam to South Africa take?

FCL from Rotterdam to Durban or Cape Town is usually 22 to 30 days port to port. LCL groupage takes longer because of consolidation and deconsolidation — typically 30 to 42 days door to door.

Do Dutch goods qualify for lower duty in South Africa?

Goods of EU origin may qualify for reduced or zero duty under the EU–SADC EPA when a valid origin declaration or EUR.1 accompanies the shipment.

Can you ship from the Netherlands by LCL?

Yes. We consolidate part loads in Rotterdam and ship them to Durban or Cape Town, charged per cubic metre.

Can you ship South African fruit to the Netherlands?

Yes. We arrange reefer containers, export clearance and the documentation required for EU entry.
