How India to South Africa freight works

India is one of the shortest deep-sea lanes into Durban. Western Indian suppliers ship from Nhava Sheva or Mundra; southern suppliers from Chennai.

Ocean FCL

Full 20ft and 40ft containers from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra and Chennai.

Ocean LCL

Groupage for part loads, so smaller importers pay only for the space they use.

Multi-supplier consolidation

Orders from several Indian suppliers combined into one shipment and one customs entry.

Air freight

From Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai into OR Tambo for urgent and high-value cargo.

Duty, permits and compliance

South Africa has no free trade agreement with India, so Indian goods generally pay the full SACU duty rate. Classification and correct valuation decide your margin.

HS classification

The tariff code decides your duty rate. We classify before you buy so the landed cost holds.

NRCS and SABS

Electrical goods, vehicle components and some building products need NRCS letters of authority before import.

ITAC permits

Used goods, certain steel, textiles and other controlled items may need an ITAC import permit.

Valuation

SARS can question low invoice values. Accurate invoices protect you from penalties and delays.

How we run an import from India

  1. Quote. Send the pro forma invoice, packing details and Incoterm. You get a landed-cost quote.
  2. Collection or port receipt. We collect from the supplier (EXW/FCA) or take over at the load port (FOB).
  3. Document check. Bill of lading, invoice, packing list and any certificates are checked before sailing.
  4. SARS clearance. We lodge the entry as a SARS-licensed clearing agent and manage inspections.
  5. Delivery. Door delivery across South Africa or onward into SADC by road.

Indian ports and what ships from them

India's west coast ports carry most cargo to South Africa, with short, direct sailings across the Indian Ocean.

Compliance by product: pharma, food, steel and textiles

Pharmaceuticals and APIs

Medicines and active ingredients need SAHPRA registration or authorisation before import. Confirm this before your supplier ships.

Rice, spices and food

Food imports need correct labelling and may need health or agricultural permits. Rice is subject to specific import rules.

Steel and fasteners

Some steel and fastener products attract anti-dumping or safeguard duties on top of normal duty. Classify before you order.

Textiles and clothing

Relatively high duty rates — the correct tariff heading and valuation make a big difference.

Auto parts

New parts clear normally; used or reconditioned parts may need ITAC permits.

Chemicals and dyes

Often dangerous goods — an SDS and correct declaration are required at booking.

Importing from India by LCL

Many Indian orders are under a full container. LCL from Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Chennai lets you import smaller quantities and test new suppliers.

  1. Send the packing list. Carton count, dimensions, weights and the supplier's city.
  2. Consolidation at origin. Cargo is delivered to the LCL warehouse at the nearest Indian port before cut-off.
  3. Sail to Durban. Direct or short-transhipment sailings across the Indian Ocean.
  4. Pre-clear and deliver. SARS clearance prepared before arrival, then CFS release and delivery.
