What we move to and from Mozambique

The N4 Maputo Corridor is one of the busiest freight routes in the region. We handle South African exports into Mozambique, Mozambican imports routed through South African ports, and cargo moving via the Port of Maputo.

Medical and project equipment

Hospital equipment, generators and project cargo for clients and contractors in Mozambique.

Mining and energy supplies

Spares, consumables and equipment for mining, gas and construction projects.

FMCG and building materials

Palletised retail stock, building materials and general cargo.

Port of Maputo cargo

Containers landed at Maputo for South African importers, cleared and trucked inland.

Routes, border posts and transit times

RouteMain border postIndicative transit
Gauteng – MaputoLebombo / Ressano Garcia1–3 days
Gauteng – BeiraLebombo or via Zimbabwe4–7 days
Maputo port – GautengRessano Garcia / Lebombo1–3 days

Transit times are indicative door to door for full loads and depend on border queues, documents being ready and the receiver's clearing agent. Peak periods add time.

Documents and customs at the border

Mozambique has its own customs authority and rules. Goods must be cleared out of South Africa and into Mozambique, and the importer needs a Mozambican clearing agent and tax number (NUIT).

Commercial invoice and packing list

Must match the cargo exactly; errors are the main cause of border delays.

SADC certificate of origin

Goods made in South Africa may qualify for SADC trade protocol preference with the correct certificate.

Importer details

Consignee NUIT and Mozambican clearing agent details are needed before the truck leaves.

How a cross-border load runs

  1. Quote and planning. Send the commodity, weight, dimensions, collection and delivery points. We quote full load (FTL) or part load and confirm the documents needed.
  2. Export clearance in South Africa. As a SARS-licensed clearing agent we lodge the export entry and prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and any certificate of origin.
  3. Loading and tracking. The truck is loaded, sealed where required and tracked to the border.
  4. Border and import clearance. We coordinate with the clearing agent at destination so the import entry is ready when the truck arrives, cutting border time.
  5. Delivery and proof. Delivery to the consignee with signed proof of delivery returned to you.

Mozambique road freight FAQs

How long does a truck take from Johannesburg to Maputo?

Usually 1 to 3 days door to door, depending on border queues at Lebombo and how quickly the import entry is processed.

Do you clear customs on the Mozambique side?

We clear the export in South Africa ourselves and coordinate with a Mozambican clearing agent for the import side, so both entries are ready before the truck arrives.

Can you quote DDP into Mozambique?

We can quote door to door including Mozambican duties and taxes on request, subject to the importer's registration details.

Do you move cargo landed at Maputo port?

Yes. We can arrange clearance and trucking of containers landed at Maputo to Gauteng.
